We get it, you’re a big fan of movies. Tell us one person who isn’t? (shh, we don’t want to hear those names) Out of the 1.29 billion population of India, everyone is smitten by the shaadi fever, and there’s no cure for it! But if you’ve closely observed, Bollywood is obsessed with ‘weddings’. Bollywood largely thrives on weddings, and we survive on Bollywood. The situation is preposterous. Hmm, in a good way!

When we speak of weddings, Hollywood too is not far behind and has its share of wedding-centric movies. If Bollywood weddings offer high-octane drama, endless dance and song sequences, then Hollywood wedding movies show the chaos in a more sophisticated and amiable way. Today, we thought we’d share our very favourite wedding-themed movies that are sure to make you smile. Let’s jump right in!

Hum Aapke Hain Koun

We all have to agree that Hum Aapke Hain Koun was almost like a guide book for every Indian, who was on the brink of getting married. Even after 21 years of its release, it still continues to spread its infectious enigma—be it sangeet, jhoota chupai or even cricket matches played between the two families. The movie was one musical party, strictly for the 20^th century. If you’re listing the wedding movies you plan on watching, make sure HAHK tops the list!                                                

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

One of the highest grossing wedding films of all times, it had a funny perspective to the wedding hullabaloo. Oh, how could we forget the cutest and the most adorable speech given by a father at his daughter’s wedding? Till date, that scene makes you smile and cry at the same time. If you want to watch something ‘aww’ and ‘witty’, then this is the movie for you.

Diwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge

Before the release of this movie, there were many other movies based on the same ‘boy meets girl, falls in love, marries her and a happy ending’ concept. However, DDLJ redefined the entire romance genre and concept of love. Till date, it’s considered to be one of the best cult classics in the romance genre, and Raj and Simran became a household name.

Bridesmaids

Watch it if you plan on watching a movie with your bridesmaids before your big day. It makes sure you and your gals have a laugh riot but at the same time teaches a couple about ‘what not to do’ lessons. We won’t give too much away on this one. Just trust us, it’s a must see!

Kal Ho Na Ho

The name Karan Johar is synonymous with weddings. This movie had everything—swanky locations, drama, comedy, music and a big fat Punjabi-Gujarati wedding, which automatically pumped up the crazy meter.

The Proposal

A fresh take on the whole aspect of marriage. This movie showed marriage as a business transaction and had the female protagonist coerce her assistant into marrying her so that she’s not deported from America. With a lot of humour, beautiful locales topped with the sizzling chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds that sets the temperature soaring, it was a complete hit with the audiences.

Band Baaja Baraat

If you want to get an idea of how crazy a big fat Indian wedding can get, then watch Band Baaja Baraat. Set in Delhi, this movie gave a fresh angle from an event planning perspective and had all the masti, laughter, naach-gaana that goes on at every wedding. The energy, madness and loads of foot tapping numbers was all it took for this movie to be a hell of a ride.

The Hangover

No other movie has ever captured the hilarious take on a bachelor party turning into a disaster. The ‘missing’ groom and the numerous efforts of the other three friends to find him, forms the entire plot. The rib-tickling comedy with twist and turns makes this movie a must watch.

Tanu weds Manu

The magic of every punchline, the ‘bindaas’ attitude of Tanu (played by Kangana) beautifully mixed with the calm and restrained Manu (played by Madhavan) made the movie worth a watch! Adding to all this chaos was Manu’s best friend and confidant, Deepak Dobriyal, who with his wit and humour took the movie to a whole new level of entertainment.

27 Dresses

This movie screams wedding from every angle. It beautifully brings out the whole spirit of being in love with the ‘concept of weddings’. The female protagonist, played by Katherine Heigl, is a professional bridesmaid who is so much in love with the concept of weddings that she juggles with multiple weddings in a single night!

Bride and Prejudice

Based on one of the famous novels ‘Pride and Prejudice’ written by Jane Austen, the movie speaks of the journey of a mother on a lookout for ideal grooms to get her four daughters married and everything that goes into the process. The movie displays everything that an Indian wedding represents– the chaos, melodrama, dance, song sequences and fun.

With so much to do and the spotlight on you, you would definitely need some ‘me’ time. So, what better way to beat that wedding stress than watching a couple of great movies?
